City Department: DPW, Wastewater Division

The Wastewater Division’s primary function is to treat the city’s wastewater to a level that meets or exceeds the stringent standards set by MADEP and USEPA, and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 220 miles of sewer lines that make up the collection system. The department accepts flow not only from Fitchburg residents and businesses but also serves the needs of the neighboring communities of Lunenburg and Westminster. In addition to treating wastewater, the Wastewater Division also provides several area communities with sludge and septage disposal services to insure a safe and reliable disposal method for these wastes, while generating revenue which helps in offsetting the cost to residents.
